Bridging the Gap

Bridging the Gap

Special Assignment: Renee Robinson

The end of summer excitement will kick off with a bang at The “Bridge the Gap” Concert and Gala at the Fairmont San Jose on Friday, September 7. There will be entertainment by the 11-time Grammy winner and former lead singer, of Santana, Tony Lindsay and his group “The Soul Soldiers”.
The highly successful Gala is the 3rd collaboration between Hunger at Home and Martha’s Kitchen; a non-profit soup kitchen. Hunger at Home agency is celebrating its 37th year of service in the Bay Area. The organization has served tens of thousands of low-income families, homeless, and seniors.

Edita Cruz, executive director of Martha’s Kitchen, often quotes that “you help one person and you don’t know how many people that one person will end up helping.”

‘The little soup kitchen that could’, was started by a good-hearted resident of Willow Glen, Louise Benson, out of her garage. She fed the hungry homeless until the lines grew long and the neighbors started  complaining. The mission has grown to now distributing over 400,000 hot and cold meals annually on-site. More than 40 other non-profit organizations in Northern California support the ever growing needy.

Martha’s Kitchen has a goal of feeding one million meals in Northern California every two years. This lofty goal can not be achieved without the financial support, and contribution of volunteers.

The homeless are exposed in our community everyday.  These people would not be able to have even one meal a day without the existence of soup kitchens like Martha’s Kitchen.  No donation is too small, and all volunteers are very helpful in these difficult times.

Martha’s Kitchen has a simple mantra: “Feed the hungry with dignity; no questions asked, no judgment made.”

Edita would like to extend an invitation to any organization who would like to use Martha’s Kitchen meal service to feed the needy in their community.
